About Our Club
The University Hockey Club prides itself on being one of the largest and friendliest clubs, boasting 4 Men’s and 5 Women’s teams, catering for every standard. The club have produced international players at Senior and U21 levels. We have a partnership with Leeds Hockey Club and are delighted to offer every player who joins us weekend hockey. With 8 Men’s teams and 5 Women’s teams they also cater for every ability and provide outstanding coaching as well as National League and North Premier hockey.
Hockey continues to grow year on year at Leeds Beckett, in 2005 we were a couple of teams training on a Sunday night on a bobbly sand pitch with a volunteer coach. Now we have a nine teams, coaching for every side, pitch sessions, fitness sessions, strength and conditioning, a team of support staff and a state of the art pitch.
The club has an immensely popular social side as well. We have weekly socials with monthly fundraising events that aren't to be missed. This is a great way to meet new people and have a laugh with friends. This culminates in an annual tour abroad in Easter
Whether it's performance, recreational or social hockey, we've got something to offer everyone!
Get Involved in the best sports club the University has to offer.
Head of Hockey - Oliver Lumley
I first got involved in Hockey at the age of 11 playing in PE and an extracurricular club at Secondary School. I played until the age of 16. I stopped when going to College.
I began playing hockey again when I came to Leeds Metropolitan University. I represented the University in BUSA/BUCS fixtures from 2005-2010. Throughout this time I studied BSc Sports Performance Coaching and PG Sports Nutrition.
In 2008-2010 I was offered a Sports Scholarship and was elected as Club Captain, this was a great honour and something which I still look back fondly on.
In September 2008 a few players and I joined Leeds HC – this was the start of a partnership that has grown every season since, the Men compete in the National League (North Conference) and the Ladies in North Premier
After graduating in 2010 I returned as a part time coach, coaching for three seasons, one with the Men's 2s and two with the Men's 1s
At the start of the 2013/14 season I was successful in being appointed as Head of Hockey, in this role I oversee the full hockey program at Leeds Beckett, with a coaching lead with the Men's and Ladies 1s. As a previous student and now Head Coach I can’t speak highly enough of the city and the university. We are currently involved in a city wide project to improve hockey output, ensuring we can cater for all levels and are advertised by a high performance program both at Leeds Beckett and at Leeds HC
